When you’re interested in purchasing a property, I recommend going to the FEMA Flood Map site, inserting the property address for any property, and learning about the flood risks to that house. Living in Houston, the flood risks can be very real, and doing research beforehand on any property can educate you and help make a decision on your risk-tolerance.
According to FEMA:
“Flood maps show how likely it is for an area to flood. Any place with a 1% chance or higher chance of experiencing a flood each year is considered to have a high risk. Those areas have at least a one-in-four chance of flooding during a 30-year mortgage. “
