Homestead Exemption Time!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – it is HOMESTEAD EXEMTION time!

As of January 1 each year homeowners can file a homestead exemption on any primary residence home that they purchased the previous year.  For more information go to http://www.hcad.org  or http://www.mctx.org/

Why do you want to file your Homestead Exemption?

A residence homestead exemption is the most common type of exemption and applies to most owner-occupied homes in Texas. An exemption excludes part of your property’s value from property taxes and can significantly lower the taxable value and subsequent tax levies. However, you must apply for an exemption. There is no charge for the property owner to file his or her own homestead exemption application with the appraisal district.

What do you need:

You will need to provide a copy of your driver’s license or state-issued personal identification certificate with your application. The address listed on your identification must match the address of the property in the application.

Who needs to file for an exemption?

If you have sold your home or established a different primary residence, recently turned 65 or qualified for disability under Social Security, you should contact the appraisal district to make changes or apply for additional exemptions.

Here are links to both Harris County and Montgomery County current forms.
